Mosteiro de Santo André de Ancede

Of the Romanesque construction of this important monastic church, first by the Canons Regular of St. Augustine and then by the Dominicans, we can only highlight the structure of the chancel, where the rose window stands out. The rest of the monastic complex, valuable for its artistic value and local and regional influence, is the work of the Modern Period. We highlight the Baroque interventions that reveal a period of revitalization in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Space

Recently refurbished space with good insulation against external noise. Building materials in very good condition. Access for loading and unloading is a little difficult but possible, nevertheless. The church is part of a monastic complex entirely under jurisdiction of the town hall, except for the vestry which is under jurisdiction of the parish.

Strong points

  • Recently refurbished space.

  • Space far from traffic routes.

  • Sufficient parking but church level can only be reached by a stair (25 steps).

Weak points

  • Somewhat difficult access for loading and unloading but, nevertheless, possible.

  • Church bell could not be turned off (it rang every 30-35 min).

  • Objects close to the altar were heavy, but it was possible to move them.

The Sound

The recordings were all made using the same methodology, keeping the same distances between performers and using the same recording technique (AB Omni 40cm spacing)

Gráfico Ancede1.png

Medium-sized space with long reverb. The first reflections came from the walls with no altars. There was some difficulty in placing the musicians because of the presence of steps and of a railing around the altar. The landing is not very long, making it difficult to accommodate medium or large size ensembles.

There is, however, the possibility of not using the altar landing and placing the musicians below at the level of the general nave instead.

Strong points

  • Good space for the control booth (vestry), with good conditions and plenty of room.

  • Good acoustic insulation and renovated building materials.

Weak points

  • Too many smooth surfaces due to recent refurbishing.

  • Steps and railing restrict placement and layout of musicians.

The Surroundings

Peaceful surroundings with survives close by. The church is part of a monastic complex with many spaces of great interest, albeit with shared jurisdictions.

Strong points

  • Nearby restaurants.

  • Medium-sized town but there was a good turnout at the concert.

  • Distancing from streets and roads.

Weak points

  • Access and permission to bring cars up to the level of the church.

  • Jurisdiction of the space divided between parish and town hall.
