Igreja do Salvador de Fervença

A church with Romanesque roots, only the vaulted chancel remains from the period and style. Its decoration is of an unusual quality for the region.

The chapel is a blend of several influences, some coming from the buildings constructed on the left bank of the River Minho, influenced by the Tui Cathedral shipyard; others coming from the Romanesque style of the Braga-Rates axis, which had a greater impact on the Tâmega and Douro basins.

The existing evidence takes us back to the second quarter of the 13th century. Outside, it is still possible to see the buttresses that supported the barrel vault, which has now been broken.

The Space

Medium-size space with a small main chapel.

Well-lit and with excellent access for loading and unloading.

Control booth can be set up in the vestry (which has its own access to the exterior), despite being quite small.

Parish priest very friendly and approachable.

Strong points

  • Easy access for loading and unloading.

  • Well-lit and without noise.

  • Turning the church bells off is possible.

Weak points

  • Building in poor condition (some dampness and doors with cracks)

  • No storage spaces.

  • Outside bathroom.

The Sound
Gráfico Fervença1.png

Medium-size space with good reverb for small and medium-size ensembles.

The size of the main chapel and the fact that the organ could not be moved, limited the number and variety of possible layouts for the musicians.

Acoustically, the space is more flattering to medium/high frequencies, probably because of the tiles on the side walls.

There is ample room for the audience, although it is necessary to remove some benches to allow room for the musicians.

Strong points

  • One has an acoustic feeling of being in a greater space than what one sees.

  • Easy for the musicians to hear one another.

  • Control booth with direct outside access.

Weak points

  • Poor isolation from outside noise.

  • Smaller layout possibilities because of unmovable organ.

  • Bad sound isolation.

The Surroundings

A welcoming space with a vibrant local community that filled the concert. Surrounded by good services (very good food and accommodation). Despite being in a quiet area, the road is very close to the church and the noise of passing traffic can be heard from inside when the music and audience are quieter.

Strong points

  • Peaceful surroundings despite being close to the road.

  • Restaurants and accommodations within a 5 km radius.

  • Enthusiastic involvement of the local community (the concert was sold out despite being held on a stormy night).

Weak points

  • Proximity of the road to the building.
